It has been some time and we have been working very hard for the things we have achieved. I can take matters into my own hands with everything that is happening. I am older and wiser to comprehend everything that is happening. I do remember from the first years it was very cool, but I like more the situation I am in now. My parents had to sign the contract because I was still under age. It was kind of different thing and I remember being very overwhelmed. At the time, Within Temptation were playing in front of ten thousands of people. Not that To Elyisum was not a big deal back then, there were hundreds of people there. All the other stuff I did was with bands that were really mainly hobby bands, we were playing at local venues. They were thinking of starting anew after their previous singer left the and when I joined I was around fifteen or sixteen at the time. Keep in mind, when I enjoyed To Elysium they were a performing and recording band. Having both had experience in other bands did you feel new life going into this new project?Ĭharlotte Wessels – I was pretty overwhelmed. Martjin Westerholt had been part of Within Temptation prior to Delain as well. Now you came into the band around 2005 after your time with To Elysium. It is strange how things can go, but I am really happy they went out of hand like they did because I could not imagine something cooler to do.Ĭ – It is amazing how things happen like that sometimes. Considering that we have completed four complete albums now and the tours, it all has went so completely out of hand, but I am so happy that it did. I was initially only asked to write some lyrics and vocalize, not even to sing. A lot has happened for us and it is really strange now to remember at the very beginning, Delain was actually only meant to be a studio project and a onetime thing. I became involved in 2004, we signed a deal with Roadrunner Records in 2005, and that is when things really started rolling. Like a lot of people, I thought the Vision Thing album sucked the first time I listened to it, but then I was like, you know what? Doctor Jeep isn’t such a bad song! It was almost like faux rock, like rock that comes on in a cheap movie or a video game. “I actually almost like the incarnations of the band more than the early version. I think he just managed to pull it off while keeping a badass attitude too. But because of the extremeness of how sad he was, it felt like a teenager complaining. I was like, really dude? Just chill the fuck out. Weirdly, it’s the same reason I got into The Smiths. I put it on and thought, this is sick, I’ve never heard anyone sing like that before, and it was so over-dramatic.
When I heard first heard the album First And Last And Always, I didn’t know that Goth rock was even a thing at the time. “I’ve been influenced by The Sisters Of Mercy 100%.
