
On Ashadha Purnima, Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, delivered his first sermon at Sarnath after attaining enlightenment. He appeared as a Yogi in the Himalayas and bestowed the seven sages with Yogic learnings. Lord Shiva -The Adiyogi and the SaptarishisĪs per the Yogic culture, Lord Shiva is the first Guru or Yogi, who imparted the knowledge of Yoga to the Saptarishis (the seven sages). And to honour his contributions, devotees perform Vyasa Puja on his birth anniversary. His disciples Paila, Vaisampayana, Jaimini and Sumantu, carried forward his legacy. Furthermore, he classified the Vedas into four different texts - Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda. He was born on the Purnima Tithi, Ashadha.Īpart from documenting the Mahabharata, Maharishi Veda Vyasa also played a pivotal role in it. Sage Veda Vyasa was the son of Satyavati and Sage Parashar.

And it is also the day that commemorates the birth of Veda Vyasa, the author of the great Indian epic, Mahabharata. Guru Purnima is celebrated on the Purnima Tithi (Full Moon Day) in the month of Ashadha. Hence, pupils pay tribute to their teachers for nurturing them with values and imparting education. Therefore, the Guru is the one who dispels darkness-like ignorance by showering the light of knowledge on their students. Interestingly, the Sanskrit word Guru is derived from Gu and Ru - where Gu means ignorance/darkness and Ru refers to elimination/removal.

Guru Purnima is one of the most important dates in the Hindu calendar because, on this day, people pay ode to their Gurus (teachers/mentors). It is a day dedicated to Gurus (teachers and mentors).
